CHAPTER 6. THE NEXT LUNCH

Three months later, Emily walked into the same dining hall carrying another red tray.

Nobody blocked her path.

Nobody laughed.

The investigation had uncovered several unauthorized equipment transfers linked to multiple personnel.

Cole had been removed from his position while the case continued.

Emily sat at the same table.

A young soldier nearby looked at the badge case clipped beneath her jacket.

“Ma’am?”

Emily looked up.

“Yeah?”

“Is it true you were investigating this place the whole time?”

She smiled slightly.

“Most of the time.”

The soldier laughed nervously.

Emily took a drink.

Then she added.

“Relax. Asking questions isn’t a crime.”

He smiled.

Across the room, several soldiers remembered the day Cole had tried to embarrass her in front of everyone.

He thought the quiet woman carrying lunch was someone he could intimidate.

He never imagined the badge beneath her jacket was connected to the file with his name on it.
