CHAPTER 5. THE OFFICERS WALKED IN

The doors to the dining hall opened.

Two senior officers entered with military investigators.

Cole immediately turned.

Emily remained seated.

One of the investigators walked directly toward them.

“Staff Sergeant Cole?”

Cole stood stiffly.

“Yes.”

“We need you to come with us.”

He looked at Emily.

“You set this up.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“You did.”

Emily closed the folder.

“Your paperwork did.”

Cole looked around.

The same soldiers who had laughed at Emily earlier were now watching him.

One investigator collected his phone.

Another secured his access card.

Cole’s confidence disappeared completely.

Before leaving, he looked at Emily.

“You could have told me who you were.”

Emily answered quietly.

“You could have treated me with respect without needing to know.”

The spring breeze was gentle, carrying the faint scent of cherry blossoms.
