CHAPTER 1. THE SOLDIER WITH THE RED TRAY

Sergeant Emily Sheridan was carrying a red lunch tray through the crowded military dining hall when Staff Sergeant Cole stepped into her path.

He looked at her uniform.

Then at the tray.

“Lost?”

Emily stopped.

“No.”

Cole smirked.

“Then why are you wandering around like a civilian?”

Several soldiers nearby laughed.

Emily ignored them and tried to move past.

Cole blocked her again.

“Answer me.”

Emily looked directly at him.

“I’m eating lunch.”

His smile disappeared.

Cole clearly expected her to be intimidated.

Instead, Emily calmly adjusted the tray and waited.

That irritated him even more.

Then Cole noticed something beneath the edge of her jacket.

A dark leather case.

He pointed at it.

“What’s that?”

Emily looked down.

Then back at him.

“Something you probably don’t want to ask about in front of everyone.”

Cole laughed.

That was his second mistake.
