CHAPTER 3. THE NAME ON THE FILE

Emily sat down at a nearby table.

Cole remained standing.

He clearly wanted answers.

Finally he asked.

“Does command know who you are?”

Emily took a drink.

“Some of them.”

Cole’s jaw tightened.

Then another soldier approached.

“Sergeant Sheridan?”

Emily looked up.

“Yes?”

The soldier handed her a sealed folder.

Cole immediately noticed the name printed across the front.

His own.

COLE, RYAN M.

His expression collapsed.

Emily placed the folder beside her tray.

Cole stared at it.

“What is that?”

Emily answered calmly.

“Part of the reason I’m here.”

Several soldiers around them stopped eating.

Cole stepped closer.

“You’ve been investigating me?”

Emily looked at him.

“Not only you.”

Cole’s eyes moved toward the exits.

Emily noticed.

That reaction told her more than any explanation could.

The spring breeze was gentle, carrying the faint scent of cherry blossoms.
