CHAPTER 2. THE BADGE

Cole reached toward the leather case.

Emily immediately moved it away.

“Don’t touch that.”

His expression hardened.

“Why?”

Emily opened the case herself.

Inside was an official federal badge and identification card.

Cole stopped smiling.

Several soldiers leaned closer.

Emily held it where he could see.

Special Agent Emily Sheridan.

Federal investigative assignment.

Cole stared at the badge.

“You’re an investigator?”

Emily closed the case.

“Temporarily attached to this installation.”

Cole looked around the room.

The soldiers who had been laughing were suddenly silent.

Then he looked back at Emily.

“What are you investigating?”

She picked up her tray.

“That depends.”

“On what?”

Emily looked directly at him.

“On how many people keep giving me reasons to ask questions.”

Cole’s face changed.

For the first time, he seemed worried.
