The Carter family dinner had been planned for weeks.
Daniel sat at the head of the long dining table in a white dress shirt while relatives and business partners filled the room beneath crystal chandeliers.
Beside him stood Victoria, elegant in a cream dress.
Everything looked perfect.
Until little Sophie started screaming.
Daniel turned immediately.
His seven-year-old daughter stood beside the table crying uncontrollably.
Sophie?
She pointed toward the cup in Daniels hand.
Daniel looked down.
Dark coffee had spilled across the table and down the front of his shirt.
Victoria stepped forward.
It was an accident.
Sophie shook her head violently.
No.
Daniel frowned.
What happened?
Sophie struggled to speak through her tears.
She did it.
The entire table became quiet.
Victoria stared at the child.
Sophie, stop.
Daniel slowly stood.
His daughter grabbed his hand.
She switched your cup.
Daniel looked at Victoria.
What is she talking about?
Victoria answered too quickly.
Nothing. She misunderstood.
Sophie cried harder.
I saw you.
Daniel set the cup down.
Then he looked around the dining room.
Everyone was watching.
But the only person who suddenly seemed frightened was Victoria.
