CHAPTER 2. WHAT SOPHIE SAW BEFORE DINNER

Daniel took Sophie away from the table and crouched beside her.

Tell me exactly what you saw.

Sophie wiped her face.

Before everyone came in, Victoria was standing near your chair.

Daniel looked toward the dining table.

What was she doing?

Sophie pointed at the cup.

She took yours away.

Then she put another one there.

Victoria entered the room behind them.

Daniel, this is ridiculous.

Sophie immediately moved closer to her father.

Daniel noticed.

He stood.

Why is she afraid of you?

Victoria looked offended.

She isnt.

Sophie whispered.

She told me not to say anything.

Daniel turned sharply.

What?

Victoria shook her head.

Daniel, shes confused.

Sophie reached into the pocket of her cream-colored dress.

She pulled out a small phone.

I was making a video for Grandma.

Daniel stared at it.

The camera had been recording while Sophie walked through the dining room before dinner.

And if she was telling the truth, the phone might have captured everything.
