CHAPTER 3. THE CALL CLAIRE HAD ALREADY MADE

Daniel stared at Claire.

What do you mean more than once?

Claire explained that Lily had recently started becoming frightened whenever Eleanor came over.

At first Claire thought it was only because Eleanor was strict.

Then Lily began refusing to stay alone with her.

Daniel looked toward his mother.

Why didnt anyone tell me?

Claire answered quietly.

I tried.

You kept saying your mother only wanted to help.

Daniel looked ashamed.

Eleanor raised her voice.

This is ridiculous.

Claire stepped back with Lily.

No.

What is ridiculous is that everyone keeps pretending Lily is the problem.

Then someone knocked at the front door.

Daniel turned.

Two police officers were standing outside.

Eleanor stared at Claire.

You called the police?

Claire nodded.

Earlier that afternoon, Lily had become so frightened that Claire finally decided the situation needed to be documented.

Daniel opened the door.

One officer asked calmly.

Who is Eleanor Carter?

Eleanor slowly stepped forward.

I am.

Her confidence disappeared.

Daniel looked at his mother.

For the first time, the argument was no longer happening behind closed doors.
