CHAPTER 2. DANIEL CAME HOME AT THE WORST MOMENT

Claire carried Lily toward the front door.

The little girl was still crying against her shoulder.

Eleanor followed them through the hallway.

You are overreacting.

Claire turned.

No.

I have ignored this for too long.

At that moment, the front door opened.

Daniel stepped inside.

He immediately saw his wife holding their crying daughter.

Then he saw his mother standing behind them.

Whats going on?

Eleanor answered first.

Your wife is leaving because I asked Lily to finish dinner.

Claire looked at Daniel.

Ask your daughter.

Daniel moved toward Lily.

Sweetheart?

Lily slowly lifted her head.

Grandma yelled at me.

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

She crossed her arms.

I corrected her.

Claire shook her head.

You frightened her.

Eleanor became defensive.

Someone has to teach that child boundaries.

Daniel looked at Lily again.

She immediately tightened her arms around Claire.

That reaction told him more than any argument could.

Daniel turned toward his mother.

How often has this happened?

Eleanor did not answer.

Claire did.

More than once.
