CHAPTER 1. THE CHILD WHO COULDNT STOP CRYING

Three-year-old Lily was already crying when Claire walked into the dining room.

The little girl sat beside the wooden table wearing a mustard-yellow dress, both hands pressed against her face.

Standing across from her was Daniels mother, Eleanor.

Stop crying.

Lily shook her head.

I want Mommy.

Eleanor pointed toward the untouched dinner plate.

You are not leaving this table until you finish eating.

Lily cried even harder.

Claire immediately rushed toward her daughter.

Lily.

She lifted the little girl into her arms.

Eleanor stared at her.

Put her down.

Claire looked shocked.

What happened?

She refused to eat.

So you made her sit here crying?

Eleanor crossed her arms.

She needs discipline.

Claire held Lily tighter.

She is three years old.

Eleanor stepped closer.

And you are the reason she behaves like this.

Claire stared at her.

Do not talk about me in front of my daughter.

Lily buried her face against Claires shoulder.

Then Eleanor pointed toward the front door.

If you dont like how I handle things, leave.

Claire looked at her.

Fine.

Thats exactly what Im going to do.
