CHAPTER 4. THE DAY THE FAMILY FINALLY LISTENED TO LILY

The officers spoke separately with Claire, Daniel, and Eleanor.

Nobody was arrested that afternoon.

But the visit changed everything.

Daniel finally understood that Lily had been trying to communicate something for weeks.

She was too young to explain complicated family conflict.

She only knew that she felt afraid.

Daniel stopped treating that fear like bad behavior.

Eleanor was told she would no longer be alone with Lily until the family had worked through what happened.

She was furious at first.

Then one officer asked a simple question.

When Lily sees you, does she move toward you or away from you?

Eleanor said nothing.

Across the room, Claire held Lily against her chest.

The little girl had finally stopped crying.

Daniel walked toward them.

He kissed his daughters forehead.

Im sorry I didnt understand sooner.

Lily looked at him.

Are we going home?

Daniel nodded.

Yeah.

We are.

Eleanor stood near the doorway watching them leave.

She had spent the entire afternoon insisting she was teaching Lily how to behave.

But now she was forced to face something much harder.

The child had never needed harsher discipline.

She had needed the adults around her to listen.
