CHAPTER 5. THE FINAL LANDING

Emma moved toward the corner for her final pass.

This was the moment she had worried about most.

After an entire routine, her legs were tired.

One poor landing could change the score completely.

Rachel watched from the sidelines.

Finish it.

Emma began running.

She accelerated across the blue floor.

Then jumped.

Her body rotated through the air.

She landed and immediately moved into the final pose.

One leg extended gracefully.

Her body lowered toward the floor.

Then the music ended.

For half a second, there was silence.

Emma looked toward the judges.

Then the entire arena exploded into applause.

People stood.

Rachel was crying.

Emma finally allowed herself to smile.

She had no idea what score she would receive.

For once, it did not matter.

She had walked onto the floor with hundreds of people wondering what she could not do.

She walked off having shown them what she could.
