CHAPTER 4. THE BALANCE THAT CHANGED THE ROOM

The audience erupted.

Emma smiled briefly.

But her routine was not finished.

She moved into the balance section.

Standing firmly on one leg, she slowly lifted the other until it extended almost vertically beside her body.

The position required extraordinary control.

The arena became quiet again.

Emma held it.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Her supporting foot barely moved.

Years earlier, basic balance exercises had been some of the hardest parts of training.

Without arms to counterbalance her body, Emma had learned to control tiny shifts through her hips, ankles, and core.

Now those years of practice were visible in a single moment.

Rachel covered her mouth.

One judge stopped writing and simply watched.

Emma slowly lowered her leg.

Then transitioned smoothly into the final section of the routine.

She was breathing hard now.

Her muscles were exhausted.

But when she heard the audience cheering, she smiled.

Not because they were surprised by her.

Because she knew she had earned every second of it.
