CHAPTER 3. THE MOVE THEY TOLD HER NOT TO TRY

Months earlier, Emma had shown Rachel an idea for a new tumbling pass.

Rachel studied it carefully.

That is extremely difficult.

Emma smiled.

So was everything else when I started.

The move required Emma to generate enough power from her legs to rotate completely without using her arms for additional momentum.

They trained slowly.

First on soft mats.

Then with assistance.

Then alone.

For weeks, Emma could not land it consistently.

One afternoon she sat on the edge of the floor feeling defeated.

Maybe everyone was right.

Rachel sat beside her.

About what?

That there are some things I just cant do.

Rachel shook her head.

Maybe.

But we dont know this is one of them yet.

Emma returned the next morning.

And the morning after that.

Now, during the competition, she approached the same move.

She sprinted.

Jumped.

Rotated.

For one second, the entire arena seemed frozen.

Then her feet hit the floor.

She landed.

Perfectly.
