CHAPTER 4. THE HOUSE WAS NEVER REALLY RICHARD’S

A certified envelope arrived at Richard’s house two days later.

Inside was a copy of the Mercer Family Property Trust.

Richard read the first pages quickly.

Then slowed down.

The house had been placed into a family trust years earlier by Daniel’s grandmother.

Richard possessed lifetime occupancy rights.

He did not own the property outright.

Daniel was one of the successor trustees.

And six months earlier, Emma had formally been listed as an approved minor beneficiary permitted to reside in the home.

Richard read one clause twice.

A resident could not intentionally exclude an approved minor beneficiary without triggering a formal review of occupancy rights.

Denise stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

Richard did not answer.

His phone rang.

Daniel.

This time Richard picked up immediately.

“Are you trying to take my house?”

Daniel remained calm.

“No.”

“I’m reminding you that it was never entirely yours.”

Richard said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“You told Emma her room belonged to Cody.”

“It didn’t.”

“You told her I had no authority.”

“I do.”

“And you sent her outside because you thought nobody could challenge you.”

Richard’s voice became quieter.

“What happens now?”

“That depends on you.”

Every item removed from Emma’s room had to be returned.

Her necklace.

Her clothes.

Her charger.

Her headset.

Everything.

Denise and Cody’s right to occupy the west wing would also be reviewed.

One week later, Emma returned to Ohio with her parents.

She did not return to Richard’s house to live.

Her belongings arrived in boxes.

Emma opened one and found the silver necklace her mother had given her.

She looked at Daniel.

“Did Grandpa really think he could just do that?”

Daniel sat beside her.

“I think he confused being in charge of a house with being in charge of everyone inside it.”

Emma looked down at the necklace.

“And he wasn’t?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Real authority comes with responsibility.”

He put one arm around his daughter.

“At 12:43 that night, Grandpa opened his front door because he believed sending you outside proved his power.”

Daniel looked toward the boxes containing everything that had been returned.

“What he actually did was force everyone to discover how little of that power was really his.”
