CHAPTER 3. EVERYTHING DANIEL PAID FOR STOPPED

By morning, Emma was safe.

Daniel stayed on the phone with her until she fell asleep.

Then he started making calls.

The quarterly property-tax payment he covered for Richard?

Canceled.

The maintenance service?

Canceled.

The contribution toward household insurance?

Stopped.

Then Daniel reviewed the expenses he had been quietly covering for Denise.

Her phone plan.

Part of her car insurance.

Several recurring bills.

Those stopped too.

Daniel left anything directly connected to Cody’s health or education alone.

Cody was a child.

This was not about punishing him.

It was about making the adults pay for their own lives.

At 8:43 that morning, Richard called again.

Daniel answered.

“What did you do?”

Daniel looked through the hospital window.

“What do you mean?”

“The house payment accounts are changing.”

“Yes.”

“And Denise says some of her bills aren’t being paid.”

“Yes.”

Richard became furious.

“You can’t use money to control this family.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“You put my sixteen-year-old daughter outside after midnight and told her to find somewhere else to go.”

“She was fine.”

“You had no way of knowing that.”

Silence.

Then Richard said:

“You’re destroying this family over one mistake.”

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“No.”

“You made a decision.”

“Now you’re discovering how much of your life depended on the person whose daughter you threw out.”

Then Daniel ended the call.

But Richard still believed the house protected him.

That illusion lasted two more days.
