Daniel was sitting inside a Chicago hospital when he heard what had happened.
He stood immediately.
“Where are you?”
“Outside a pharmacy.”
“At this hour?”
Emma began crying harder.
Daniel’s voice became calm.
“Stay exactly where you are.”
Within minutes, he arranged transportation to a nearby hotel.
He called the hotel himself.
Then he contacted local police so there would be an official record that his minor daughter had been put outside after midnight.
Finally, he opened the Mercer family group chat.
He typed one message.
“You put my minor daughter outside in the cold at midnight.”
“You have thirty minutes to return every item taken from her room.”
“After that, I will handle this legally and financially.”
“Do not test me.”
Richard called immediately.
Daniel declined.
Denise sent a message.

Richard had used that phrase for years.
What he rarely mentioned was how the house stayed financially comfortable.
Daniel paid the property taxes.
Daniel covered several major repairs.
Daniel helped with insurance costs.
When Denise’s divorce left her struggling, Daniel quietly paid household expenses so she and Cody could remain there.
Nobody called that support when they were receiving it.
They simply expected it.
Daniel opened his banking records.
