Daniel heard someone crying outside the study.
He opened the door.
His youngest daughter Lily stood there.
Her face was wet with tears.
Daniel immediately crouched beside her.
“Sweetheart, what’s wrong?”
Lily looked toward the laptop.
“I heard Victoria talking before.”
Daniel became still.
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
Lily explained that she had gone looking for wrapping paper near the study.
Victoria was inside speaking on the phone.
Lily heard her mention Daniel’s company.
She also heard Victoria say that after Christmas, everything would finally belong to her.
Daniel looked toward the computer.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Lily lowered her eyes.
“She told me grown-up things were none of my business.”
Daniel took her hand.
“You can always tell me when something feels wrong.”
Lily nodded.
Daniel looked back at the recorded call.
His daughter had heard the truth before he did.
