Christmas dinner had already started when Daniel Carter walked into the mansion carrying a red gift box.
At the long dining table sat his wife Victoria and three young girls.
The room was decorated with white lights, crystal glasses, and an enormous Christmas tree.
Daniel smiled.
“Merry Christmas.”
The girls immediately looked toward him.
But Victoria did not smile.
Daniel noticed.
He placed the gift near the tree and walked toward the table.
One of the girls looked upset.
Another was staring silently at her plate.
Daniel frowned.
“What happened?”
Victoria stood.
“Nothing happened.”
Daniel looked at the children again.
Then he saw the youngest girl wiping tears from her face.
He turned back to Victoria.
“That doesn’t look like nothing.”
Victoria’s expression hardened.
And suddenly the Christmas dinner became very quiet.
