CHAPTER 3. THE ENVELOPE IN THE OFFICE

Daniel helped Eleanor inside.

Lily stayed close to her grandmother.

Victoria followed several steps behind.

Daniel went directly to his office.

What am I looking for?

Eleanor pointed toward his desk.

The bottom drawer.

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a large envelope.

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

Daniel, that is private.

He looked at her.

It is inside my desk.

He opened the envelope.

Bank documents.

Property records.

And several legal forms.

Daniel read the first page.

His expression changed.

The documents concerned Eleanor’s home.

Her property was being transferred into a company Daniel had never heard of.

He looked toward his mother.

Did you approve this?

Eleanor shook her head.

No.

Daniel turned toward Victoria.

Her face went pale.

He looked at the signature.

It appeared to be Eleanor’s.

But Eleanor immediately said.

That is not my signature.

Daniel stared at Victoria.

Explain this.

She said nothing.

Then Lily noticed something on the desk.

A second envelope.

This one had Daniel’s name written across the front.

The spring breeze was gentle, carrying the faint scent of cherry blossoms.
