CHAPTER 1. THE CRY BY THE WATER

The afternoon was supposed to be peaceful at the Carter estate.

Then little Lily heard someone calling for help from the backyard.

She ran toward the swimming pool.

Her grandmother Eleanor was struggling near the edge of the water.

A woman named Victoria was already kneeling beside the pool in a long white dress.

Lily stopped.

Grandma!

Victoria reached down and grabbed Eleanor’s hands.

Hold on.

Eleanor looked exhausted.

Her gray hair was soaked and water covered her face.

Lily began crying.

What happened?

Victoria looked toward her.

Go inside.

Lily shook her head.

No.

Victoria tried pulling Eleanor closer to the edge.

Then Eleanor looked directly at Lily.

Call your father.

Lily froze.

Why?

Eleanor whispered.

Just call him.

Before Lily could move, the back doors of the mansion opened.

Daniel Carter stepped outside carrying a bouquet of red roses.

He stopped instantly.

The flowers slipped lower in his hand.

Mom?
