CHAPTER 2. DANIEL DROPPED THE ROSES

Daniel ran toward the pool.

He dropped the bouquet onto the patio.

Victoria stood quickly.

Daniel, wait.

He ignored her.

Eleanor was still holding onto the pool edge.

Daniel dropped to his knees and reached for his mother.

Give me your hand.

Eleanor grabbed him.

Daniel and Victoria helped her safely toward the edge.

Lily stood nearby crying.

Once Eleanor was secure, Daniel turned toward Victoria.

What happened?

Victoria immediately answered.

She slipped.

Daniel looked at his mother.

Eleanor did not speak.

That silence bothered him.

Daniel crouched beside her.

Mom.

Did you fall?

Eleanor looked toward Victoria.

Then back at Daniel.

I was trying to leave.

Daniel frowned.

Leave where?

Eleanor’s breathing slowed.

Your house.

Daniel looked confused.

Why?

Victoria interrupted.

She is upset. She does not know what she is saying.

Eleanor suddenly grabbed Daniel’s wrist.

I know exactly what I am saying.

Then she pointed toward the mansion.

Check your office.
