CHAPTER 2. WHAT ELEANOR HAD SEEN

Daniel held Lily against his chest.

She was still crying.

He looked toward his mother.

What are you talking about?

Eleanor pointed toward the kitchen counter.

Ask Victoria about the black folder.

Victorias face changed.

Daniel noticed immediately.

What folder?

Victoria crossed her arms.

Your mother is confused.

Eleanor became furious.

I know exactly what I saw.

Daniel slowly put Lily down beside him but kept one protective arm around her.

Eleanor explained that earlier that afternoon she had walked into Daniels study.

Victoria was standing beside his desk.

In her hands was a folder containing company documents.

When Eleanor asked what she was doing, Victoria immediately closed it.

Daniel looked at his wife.

Were you in my study?

Victoria hesitated.

I was looking for something.

What?

She did not answer.

Lily suddenly pointed toward the dining table.

She put papers under there.

Everyone turned.

Daniel walked toward the chair Victoria had been standing beside.

Underneath it was a black folder.

Eleanor stared at Victoria.

Thats the one.
