Daniel moved toward his mother.
“What drawer?”
Eleanor slowly opened her hand.
A tiny golden key rested in her palm.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“She’s confused.”
Daniel looked at her.
Then back at Eleanor.
His mother shook her head weakly.
“Drawer.”
Daniel took the key.
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Daniel, don’t.”
That was the first moment he knew something was wrong.
He looked around the hospital room.
Near the window stood a small wooden cabinet.
One drawer had a brass lock.
Daniel walked toward it.
Vanessa followed.
“Whatever is inside there does not matter.”
Daniel stopped.
“If it doesn’t matter, why are you scared?”
