CHAPTER 2. ELEANOR’S EXPLANATION

Daniel stood.

Why is Claire locked in there?

Eleanor stopped several feet away.

Daniel, listen to me.

He pointed toward the bars.

Explain this.

Eleanor looked toward Claire.

She was trying to leave with something that does not belong to her.

Claire immediately shouted.

That is a lie.

Daniel looked between them.

What were you taking?

Claire wiped tears from her face.

Nothing.

I found something.

Eleanor’s expression hardened.

Daniel noticed.

What did she find?

Eleanor said nothing.

Claire reached into the pocket of her pale green dress.

She pulled out a folded document.

Eleanor stepped forward.

Give me that.

Daniel immediately moved between them.

No.

Claire held the paper through the bars.

Daniel took it.

The moment he saw the name printed across the top, his expression changed.

ROBERT CARTER.

His late father.
