CHAPTER 1. THE CRY IN THE HALLWAY

Daniel Carter dropped to his knees the moment he saw her.

At the far end of the marble hallway stood a large metal enclosure.

Behind the bars was Claire.

His wife.

She was crying, gripping the metal with both hands.

Daniel stared at her in disbelief.

Claire?

She looked up.

Daniel.

He rushed forward.

What happened?

Claire tried to speak, but she was shaking too badly.

Daniel looked at the heavy lock on the door.

Then he looked around the enormous mansion.

Who did this?

Claire whispered one name.

Eleanor.

Daniel froze.

His mother.

Before he could say another word, footsteps echoed through the hallway.

Daniel slowly turned.

Eleanor Carter appeared wearing a dark red suit.

Her face changed the moment she saw Daniel kneeling beside the locked enclosure.
