CHAPTER 2. THE FIRST TUMBLING PASS

Emma accelerated across the floor.

Her first steps were fast and controlled.

Then she jumped.

Her body rotated through the air.

She landed on her feet.

The crowd reacted immediately.

But Emma did not stop.

She continued into another tumbling sequence.

Rachel watched every movement carefully.

Emma had practiced this combination hundreds of times.

At first, she could barely stay upright after landing.

Then she learned how to control her center of gravity using her legs, shoulders, and core.

Every mistake became another adjustment.

Every fall became another lesson.

Now, under the competition lights, the routine looked effortless.

Emma completed another rotation and landed again.

Her knees bent slightly.

Then she stood tall.

A judge leaned forward.

Another began writing quickly.

Emma looked toward the far side of the floor.

The most difficult part of her routine was still ahead.

Rachel whispered from the sidelines.

Come on, Emma.

Emma took another breath.

Then she began running again.
