CHAPTER 6. THE DINNER TABLE THREE MONTHS LATER

Three months later, Daniel and Lily sat at the same dining table.

Eleanor was with them.

The black folder was gone.

So was Victoria.

The investigation had confirmed that the transfer never went through.

Daniel had changed every financial authorization inside Carter Holdings.

No major transaction could be approved by one person again.

But the biggest change was inside the house.

Daniel made sure Lily understood one rule.

If something frightened her or felt wrong, she could always tell him.

That evening, Eleanor served dinner.

Lily smiled.

Grandma?

Yes?

You were really mad that night.

Eleanor laughed softly.

I was.

Daniel looked at his mother.

You were pointing at Victoria like you were about to put her on trial yourself.

Eleanor smiled.

Someone had to tell you what was happening.

Lily looked at Daniel.

And I told you too.

Daniel reached across the table and squeezed her hand.

Yes.

You did.

Months earlier, the room had been filled with shouting, fear, and secrets.

Now it was quiet.

Daniel looked at his daughter and understood something he should have learned much earlier.

The truth had not come from the richest or most powerful person at the table.

It had come from a frightened little girl who refused to stay silent.
