CHAPTER 5. THE DECISION DANIEL MADE THAT NIGHT

Daniel called his attorney before dinner was even cleared from the table.

Every transfer connected to the documents was frozen.

The forged authorization was canceled.

Victoria sat silently while Daniel made the calls.

When he finished, she stood.

Daniel, please.

He looked at her.

How long were you planning this?

She wiped tears from her face.

A few weeks.

Daniel shook his head.

And my daughter saw you.

Victoria looked toward Lily.

I never wanted her involved.

Daniel answered.

But you involved her the moment you told her to stay quiet.

Victoria tried to take his hand.

He stepped back.

You need to leave tonight.

Her face went pale.

Daniel.

I need time.

Eleanor watched silently.

For once, she did not celebrate being right.

Daniel picked Lily up again.

The little girl rested her head against his shoulder.

Daniel looked at Victoria.

I can deal with lost money.

I can deal with bad decisions.

But I will not teach my daughter that she has to hide the truth to protect an adult.
