CHAPTER 1. THE SCREAM AT THE DINNER TABLE

The Carter family dinner had barely started when six-year-old Lily began crying.

Daniel was still outside when the argument started.

His wife Victoria stood beside the dining table wearing a dark burgundy blouse.

Across from her sat Daniels elderly mother Eleanor.

Lily was trapped between them.

Victoria leaned toward the little girl.

How many times do I have to tell you to stop?

Lily backed away from the table.

I want Dad.

Victoria became even angrier.

Your father cannot rescue you every time you refuse to listen.

Eleanor immediately stood.

Victoria. Enough.

Victoria turned toward her.

Stay out of this.

Lily began crying harder.

Then the front door suddenly opened.

Daniel rushed into the dining room.

He stopped when he saw his daughter.

Lily immediately ran toward him.

Dad.

Daniel lifted her into his arms.

She wrapped both arms tightly around his neck.

He looked at Victoria.

What happened?

Victoria answered quickly.

She was misbehaving.

Before Daniel could respond, Eleanor pointed directly at Victoria.

No.

Tell him why you were really angry.
