The hospital room was almost completely dark when Vanessa stood beside Eleanor’s bed.
Only the blue glow from the medical monitors lit the room.
Eleanor was eighty years old, weak, and barely able to speak.
Vanessa leaned closer.
“You need to rest.”
Eleanor stared at her.
Vanessa reached toward the oxygen mask.
At that exact moment, the door opened.
Daniel rushed inside.
He stopped when he saw Vanessa standing over his mother.
“Get away from her.”
Vanessa turned sharply.
Daniel crossed the room immediately.
Eleanor weakly lifted one hand.
Then she whispered one word.
“Drawer.”
