Daniel followed Victoria away from the table.
“What did you say to them?”
Victoria crossed her arms.
“They need to learn how this family works.”
Daniel stared at her.
“They’re children.”
Victoria stepped closer.
“And you spoil them.”
Her voice became louder.
Daniel tried to stay calm.
“Not tonight.”
Victoria pointed toward the dining table.
“You always take their side.”
Daniel looked toward the girls.
The youngest was crying again.
“That’s because they shouldn’t be afraid during Christmas dinner.”
Victoria’s face changed.
She moved closer to Daniel.
The argument became more intense.
Then Daniel stepped backward near the Christmas tree.
His foot caught beside the presents.
He lost his balance and fell into the lower branches.
Decorations shook and several ornaments dropped.
The girls gasped.
Daniel slowly pushed himself back up.
But something about Victoria’s reaction bothered him.
She was not worried.
She looked nervous.
