CHAPTER 5. THE CAMERA ABOVE THE POOL

Daniel looked through the glass doors toward the backyard.

Then he remembered something.

The pool security camera.

He immediately opened the home security system.

Victoria’s expression changed.

Daniel noticed.

He selected the backyard recording.

The footage showed Eleanor walking toward the patio holding the envelope.

Victoria followed her.

They argued.

Eleanor tried to walk away.

Victoria reached toward the documents.

The two women struggled over the envelope.

Then Eleanor lost her balance near the pool.

Daniel stopped the video.

Nobody spoke.

He looked directly at Victoria.

You told me she simply slipped.

Victoria started crying.

I panicked.

Daniel replayed the footage.

Eleanor was clearly trying to move away from the argument.

Daniel closed the laptop.

Victoria stepped toward him.

Daniel, please.

He moved back.

My mother could have been seriously hurt.

Victoria shook her head.

I never wanted that.

Daniel answered quietly.

But you wanted those papers badly enough to keep chasing her.

That was enough for him.

The spring breeze was gentle, carrying the faint scent of cherry blossoms.
