CHAPTER 4. WHAT ELEANOR DISCOVERED

Daniel opened the second envelope.

Inside were copies of emails between Victoria and a private property attorney.

Daniel read silently.

The plan was simple.

Transfer Eleanor’s estate into a holding company.

Then sell the property.

The money would be moved into an investment account controlled by Victoria.

Daniel looked stunned.

How long has this been happening?

Eleanor answered.

I found the papers this morning.

Daniel looked at her.

Is that why you were leaving?

She nodded.

I confronted Victoria.

Victoria immediately spoke.

Daniel, your mother misunderstood everything.

Eleanor stared at her.

Then why did you try to take the documents from me?

Daniel looked toward Victoria.

She became defensive.

I was trying to stop her from making a mistake.

Daniel shook his head.

Whose mistake?

Victoria looked away.

Eleanor continued.

I took the papers and went outside.

She followed me.

Daniel looked toward the pool.

Suddenly the scene he had walked into felt very different.

His mother had not simply slipped during a quiet afternoon.

She had been trying to leave with evidence.
