CHAPTER 4. WHY CLAIRE WAS LOCKED AWAY

Eleanor’s confidence disappeared.

Daniel looked at her.

Tell me the truth.

She finally admitted that Robert had created the trust years earlier.

After Daniel married Claire, Robert added her as a protected beneficiary.

Eleanor hated the decision.

She believed family money should remain under direct Carter control.

After Robert died, she quietly began preparing documents to remove Claire.

Then Claire discovered the original papers.

Daniel stared at his mother.

And when she found them, you locked her in there?

Eleanor shook her head.

I only needed time.

Time for what?

To get the papers back.

Claire gripped the bars.

She told me nobody would believe me.

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

His face hardened.

You really thought that?

Eleanor did not answer.

Daniel turned toward the lock.

Then he noticed a large brass key hanging from Eleanor’s hand.

He held out his palm.

Give it to me.
