CHAPTER 6. THE NEXT DINNER

Two months later, Daniel invited both women back to the house.

Not for a celebration.

For dinner.

Claire arrived first.

Eleanor came later.

Neither woman smiled.

Daniel sat between them.

Before anyone touched the food, he spoke.

There are new rules in this house.

Eleanor immediately looked annoyed.

Daniel continued.

No insults.

No personal attacks.

No pretending hurtful behavior is family tradition.

Then he looked at Claire.

And no shouting, throwing, or humiliating anyone when anger takes over.

Claire nodded.

Fair.

Eleanor remained silent.

Daniel looked at her.

Mom.

Finally she sighed.

Fine.

Dinner began.

It was awkward.

Quiet.

Almost painfully normal.

But halfway through the meal, Eleanor asked Claire to pass the bread.

Claire handed it to her.

Thank you.

Claire nodded.

You are welcome.

Daniel noticed.

No shouting.

No insults.

No one storming away.

It was not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But after everything that happened, ordinary dinner felt like progress.

The spring breeze was gentle, carrying the faint scent of cherry blossoms.
