CHAPTER 1. THE SOUP AT THE TABLE

Dinner at the Carter house had barely started when Claire entered carrying a large white serving bowl.

She wore a soft pink dress and tried to smile as she approached the table.

Daniel sat across from his mother Eleanor.

Everything looked calm.

Until Eleanor looked up at Claire.

You are late.

Claire stopped.

Dinner is still hot.

Eleanor stared at the bowl.

That is not what I asked.

Claire tightened her grip on the serving dish.

Daniel looked uncomfortable but said nothing.

Claire placed the bowl near Eleanor.

Please. Just eat.

Eleanor leaned back.

You always think saying please fixes everything.

Claire’s expression changed.

Daniel finally looked up.

Mom.

But Eleanor ignored him.

Claire stood beside the table, humiliated and angry.

Then Eleanor said one more thing.

If you cannot behave like part of this family, maybe you should stop pretending you are.

Claire froze.

Daniel slowly turned toward his mother.

And for the first time that evening, he realized the dinner was no longer about food.
