Several weeks later, the brown suitcase was still in Daniel’s storage room.
He could not bring himself to throw it away.
The forged travel authorization was under investigation.
Lily’s passport had been secured.
Victoria was no longer allowed to make travel decisions involving Lily without formal approval.
Daniel focused on one thing.
Making sure his daughter understood she had done nothing wrong.
One evening Lily found him holding the old boarding pass.
Daddy?
Daniel looked up.
She pointed at the ticket.
Are we still going there?
Daniel smiled gently.
Only if you want to someday.
And only when we plan it together.
Lily thought for a moment.
Can we go somewhere with a beach?
Daniel laughed.
Deal.
She climbed into his lap.
Daniel looked at the boarding pass one last time.
That piece of paper had once represented a plan designed to take his daughter away without his knowledge.
Now it reminded him of something simpler.
A child should never be caught inside an adults fight.
Daniel tore the ticket in half.
Then he carried Lily upstairs.
The flight left without them.
