CHAPTER 5. THE ROOM FINALLY SPOKE

General Hayes asked one simple question.

Who saw what happened today?

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then one Marine raised his hand.

I did, sir.

Another followed.

Then another.

Within moments, nearly half the dining hall had raised their hands.

Ryan looked around in disbelief.

The same people who had stayed silent for months were finally speaking.

One Marine said Ryan had deliberately stepped into Emma’s path.

Another had recorded the entire incident.

The video was handed to the general.

He watched it once.

Then he looked at Ryan.

Report to headquarters immediately.

Ryan’s shoulders dropped.

Yes, sir.

As he walked away, nobody laughed.

Emma stood beside the table holding the official document.

One of the younger Marines approached her.

Why didnt you tell us the investigation was happening?

Emma looked at him.

Because I needed people to tell the truth because it was true.

Not because they thought I was going to win.

The spring breeze was gentle, carrying the faint scent of cherry blossoms.
