CHAPTER 1. THE TRAY ON THE FLOOR

The military dining hall was packed when Sergeant Emma Hayes lost her footing.

Her lunch tray crashed onto the floor.

Food scattered across the polished tiles.

A few Marines laughed.

Standing over her was Staff Sergeant Ryan Cole.

He smiled.

Looks like you still cant handle pressure.

Emma pushed herself up onto one knee.

Ryan did not offer a hand.

Instead, he looked around at the crowded room.

Come on, Hayes. Clean it up.

Several Marines pulled out their phones.

Emma looked up at him.

You did that on purpose.

Ryan leaned closer.

Prove it.

Emma clenched her fist against the floor.

She wanted to argue.

Instead, she quietly began collecting the broken pieces from her tray.

Ryan smiled as if he had won.

What he did not know was that Emma had walked into the dining hall carrying something far more important than lunch.

Inside her uniform pocket was an official document.

And his name was on it.

The spring breeze was gentle, carrying the faint scent of cherry blossoms.
