CHAPTER 5. THE DOCUMENT MARCUS WANTED

Daniel spoke through the phone.

Ethan, the envelope contains a copy of a legal document.

Ethan looked at Claire.

What kind of document?

Evidence.

Daniel explained that Marcus had been accused of moving money from the Carter family company into private accounts.

The original records were being delivered to federal investigators.

The copy in Ethan’s bag was not the only evidence.

But Marcus did not know that.

He believed taking the envelope could protect him.

Ethan looked frightened.

Why did you give it to me?

Daniel paused.

I didnt know Marcus knew you were traveling.

That was my mistake.

Claire took the phone.

Airport security will meet us when we land.

Daniel thanked her.

Marcus remained seated under the watch of two crew members.

For the rest of the flight, Ethan stayed near the galley.

Claire brought him water.

You did the right thing calling your dad.

Ethan looked toward seat 2A.

Then toward Marcus.

I thought adults were supposed to know when someone is lying.

Claire smiled sadly.

Adults miss things too.

That is why questions matter.
