CHAPTER 4. WHY EMMA WAS TRUSTED

Daniel asked Emma to continue.

She explained that Eleanor had discovered several unauthorized withdrawals from the family trust.

The transactions were disguised to look like property income.

Margaret had been moving money for almost two years.

At first, Eleanor confronted her privately.

Margaret promised to return everything.

But the missing amount kept growing.

Eleanor became seriously ill before she could complete the investigation.

So she made a decision nobody expected.

She trusted Emma.

Not a lawyer.

Not another relative.

Emma.

Daniel looked at her.

Why you?

Emma hesitated.

Your mother said everyone else had something to gain.

I didnt.

Daniel looked around the table.

Nobody spoke.

Emma continued.

Mrs. Carter gave me the documents, the letter, and instructions.

She told me to wait until the next full family dinner.

Then serve her favorite pie.

Daniel looked down at the dessert.

Apple.

His mothers favorite.

Margaret suddenly said.

Youre all believing a housemaid over family?

Daniel turned toward her.

No.

Im believing records.

And Im believing the woman my mother trusted enough to leave them with.
