CHAPTER 3. THE HOUSE THAT NEVER CHANGED HANDS

Emma explained that Eleanor had become suspicious shortly before her death.

She had discovered property-tax notices still arriving for the lake house.

That made no sense if the property had truly been sold.

So Eleanor asked Emma to retrieve several unopened envelopes from her private study.

Inside were records showing the house still belonged to the Carter family trust.

Daniel looked at Margaret.

Then where did the sale money come from?

Margaret said nothing.

Evelyn turned toward her.

Margaret?

Daniel pulled out his phone and called the family attorney.

The answer came quickly.

No transfer of ownership had ever been completed.

Daniel stared at the table.

Six months earlier, nearly four million dollars had appeared in one of the family accounts.

Margaret had told everyone it came from the sale.

Daniel looked directly at her.

Where did that money actually come from?

Margaret stood.

I was trying to protect the family.

Daniel laughed once.

Protect us from what?

She looked toward Emma.

Then she said quietly.

From what your mother discovered.

Emma lowered her eyes.

Daniel understood immediately.

The lake house was only the beginning.
