CHAPTER 4. DANIEL FINALLY TOLD THE TRUTH

Daniel was questioned three days later.

At first, he denied everything.

Then investigators showed him the records.

Transfers.

Emails.

Account access logs.

Messages between him and Emily.

One message changed the case.

Daniel had written:

If anyone asks, tell them you handled the transfers. I will fix it later.

Emily’s attorney stared at him.

You let her take the blame.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

I was scared.

The investigator asked.

And what about her child?

Daniel said nothing.

The silence lasted several seconds.

Finally he admitted he had convinced Emily that accepting responsibility would result in a lighter sentence.

He promised to support her son.

Instead, he disappeared.

When Emily learned what he had confessed, she did not celebrate.

She only asked one question.

Does this mean I can go home?

Her attorney smiled.

Not today.

But for the first time, yes.

We have a real chance.
