CHAPTER 3. THE LETTER FROM THE LAWYER

Two weeks later, Emily received a letter in her cell.

It came from her attorney.

Her case was being reviewed.

New evidence had surfaced.

Emily read the letter three times.

Years earlier, she had accepted responsibility for a financial crime connected to the company where she worked.

She believed doing so would protect someone she loved.

Her former fiancé Daniel.

Daniel had promised to fix everything once she was inside.

He never did.

Now investigators had found emails and transaction records showing Daniel had controlled the accounts.

Emily had not been the person directing the scheme.

Her attorney believed the new evidence could change everything.

Emily sat on the edge of her bunk.

She thought about her son touching the glass.

Mama.

For years, she had accepted losing time with him because she believed there was no way back.

Now there might be.

Emily folded the letter carefully.

Then she whispered one sentence to herself.

I am coming home.
