The mess hall doors opened.
Two Military Police officers entered.
Vaughn looked toward them.
Then toward Colonel Hale.
“Sir, this is over a table?”
Hale’s expression remained cold.
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“Over the pattern.”
The MPs moved to either side of Vaughn.
His confidence disappeared.
He looked around desperately.
The same soldiers who had laughed minutes earlier now avoided his eyes.
Nobody defended him.
Nobody smiled.
Vaughn finally looked at Lena.
“You planned this whole thing.”
Lena looked at the food scattered across the floor.
Then back at him.
“No.”
Her voice was quiet.
“You just followed your usual routine.”
The words hit harder than shouting would have.
The MPs escorted Vaughn toward the doors.
He walked through an aisle of silent soldiers.
Phones slowly lowered.
When the doors closed behind him, the entire room seemed to breathe again.
Colonel Hale turned toward everyone.
“Any footage recorded on personal devices will be submitted to the sergeant major or deleted by 1300.”
Nobody argued.
Then he looked back at Lena.
“Are you intact, Private?”
Lena glanced at the overturned chair.
“Fully operational, sir.”
For half a second, Hale almost smiled.
“Good.”
Then he walked away.
Lena remained standing alone beside the mess she had never created.
