CHAPTER 1. THE TABLE HE KICKED

The Fort Halbrook mess hall was packed when Specialist Derek Vaughn kicked the corner of Private Lena Mercer’s table.

Metal screeched across the tile.

Her tray flipped.

Food scattered across the floor.

Lena went down beside her overturned chair.

For one second, the room was silent.

Then soldiers started laughing.

Vaughn stood over her with a satisfied grin.

“Looks like you picked the wrong table, sweetheart.”

Several phones appeared immediately.

Lena stayed on the floor.

No crying.

No shouting.

No attempt to argue.

Vaughn leaned closer.

“What are you gonna do now?”

He laughed.

“File a report on me?”

The laughter continued.

Then Lena slowly looked up.

Her expression was completely calm.

She opened her clenched right hand.

Inside was a neatly folded official military complaint form.

Derek Vaughn’s name, rank, and unit were already printed across the top.

The laughter stopped.

Lena unfolded it.

“No.”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“I already did.”

Vaughn’s smile vanished.

“What the hell is that?”

Lena stood slowly.

Food covered her boots.

Her chair remained on the floor.

But suddenly she no longer looked like the person being humiliated.

She looked like the only person in the room who knew exactly what was happening.

“That’s my third complaint.”

Vaughn froze.

“Third?”
