CHAPTER 3. THE GIRL WITH THE TEDDY BEAR

Emergency responders widened the opening.

Inside sat a young girl around six years old.

Her face and clothes were dirty from the dark space.

She clutched a teddy bear tightly against her chest.

Daniel stared at her.

What is your name?

The girl hesitated.

Emily.

Rachel knelt nearby.

Who brought you here?

Emily did not answer.

Instead, she looked directly at Daniel.

Her eyes widened.

I know you.

Daniel froze.

What?

Emily opened a small pocket on the teddy bear.

Inside was an old photograph.

She handed it to Daniel.

The picture showed Daniel as a young boy standing beside an older girl.

Daniel stared at it.

Sarah.

Rachel looked confused.

Who is Sarah?

Daniel barely answered.

My sister.

She disappeared when I was a child.

Emily looked at him.

She is my mom.

The spring breeze was gentle, carrying the faint scent of cherry blossoms.
