CHAPTER 2. WHAT CLAIRE SAW ON THE FLOOR

Claire carried Lily away from the table.

The broken glass was spread across the floor beside a fallen plate.

Daniel walked in from the hallway.

He immediately saw his crying daughter.

What happened?

Claire turned toward him.

Ask your mother.

Eleanor interrupted.

It was an accident.

Daniel looked at the floor.

What was?

Eleanor explained that Lily had knocked over a glass while sitting at the table.

Claire shook her head.

She cannot even reach that glass from where she was sitting.

Daniel looked toward his mother.

Eleanor became defensive.

I was trying to feed her.

Claire pointed toward the food on the floor.

She was screaming because she did not want it.

Eleanor raised her voice.

Children need to learn.

Claire stared at her.

Not like this.

Lily began crying again as Eleanor moved closer.

Daniel noticed immediately.

His daughter was not reaching toward her grandmother.

She was moving away from her.
