CHAPTER 1. THE CRYING AT THE TABLE

Lunch at the Carter house had barely started when little Lily began crying.

She sat on the dining table in her yellow dress, tears streaming down her face.

Her mother Claire rushed toward her.

Lily.

Claire lifted the baby into her arms.

Across the room, Daniels mother Eleanor looked irritated.

She is fine.

Claire stared at her.

She has been crying since I walked in.

Eleanor crossed her arms.

Because you pick her up every time she makes a sound.

Claire held Lily against her chest.

She is a baby.

Eleanor stepped closer.

And you are teaching her that crying gets her whatever she wants.

Claire looked down at Lily.

The little girl was still trembling.

Then Claire noticed the broken glass and scattered food on the floor beside the table.

She slowly looked back at Eleanor.

What happened here?

Eleanor said nothing.

Claire pointed toward the mess.

What happened before I came in?

For the first time, Eleanor looked nervous.
